Naked Laughter

Yesterday was a relaxing day with my son. One thing we did was watch a bunch of movies and just spend some good ol' time chatting and laughing about what we saw. We watched a dud, Legion, it was the old case of the previews were much better than the entire flick case. And yes, I did fall asleep during it. But then there were the episodes of 24, now that's quality and my kind of viewing! Not to mention it's pretty easy on my eyes--yes, I dig Kiefer Sutherland and action movies in general.

But what really set the day off as one of those truly cool days was the laughter. My son had never watched Naked Gun. So yesterday was his introduction to Frank Drebin, or the late, great actor Leslie Nielsen. Kyle has been cultured to see Airplane. After all, I must introduce my son to "quality" movies. I wouldn't be a good mom if I didn't!

Check out this YouTube link from one of our favorite scenes--driver's ed.

So my highlight of the day was sharing the movie and, most of all, listening to my 15-year-old fav dude laugh and laugh and laugh. While I'll enjoyed the movie too, listening to my son let loose and laugh was the icing on the cake for a great day with my son. A day that I won't soon forget. A day that I will always treasure.

Natural forces cause a wave of emotions for me

I saw this video of the tsunami this afternoon and I must confess that I didn't have much to say. I couldn't. I was overwhelmed. The force of the ocean's water rushing on shore and moving unstoppable over buildings, slamming ships together like a child's toys was worse than I imagined before viewing the CNN video.

While the forces of nature are one of the few things humans can't control in this age of technological advances, seeing natural disasters never cease to amaze me. I appreciate the sheer power of nature. From thunderstorms to hurricanes to tornadoes, I am amazed. Not dwelling on the fact of natural forces, no matter what the magnitude, it causes me to stop and reflect. It serves as a time to pause and contemplate.

What is important to me? What do I value? What would I do if I was in the victims' shoes? How can I help?

Maybe you've had the same thoughts.

Move over Charlie Sheen; I've got tiger blood too

This was originally written for my blog on The Holmes Bargain Hunter.

Have you heard? Charlie Sheen has "tiger blood." Or at least that is the latest trending term on Twitter. You know, a trending term, a.k.a. a commonly used word or phrase.

According to the troubled actor, tiger blood not only makes a person strong but able to resist becoming addicted to drugs and the evils of life. Of course the more used #tigerblood becomes, the more definitions it gets. To date, Charlie has earned him himself a winning trending term and the attention of media outlets across the globe. Forget the turmoil in the Middle East; a dictator on the brink, economic woes and genocide in Africa, Charlie Sheen has tiger blood!

But for me, tiger blood is nothing like Charlie Sheen claims it to be. Of course I must confess to following the Charlie Sheen movement, which has kept the Hollywood paparazzi working 24/7, but I believe that dude has some serious problems. All the media hype is fueling his desire to keep it going and what I believe to be a serious mental problem that needs to be addressed. However, Charlie's mental health doesn't seem to be a concern right now. I predict soon the son of one of my favorite actors, Martin Sheen, will crash and burn. Hopefully I'm wrong and Charlie will seek the help he needs.

So I must confess, that I do have tiger blood running through my veins, but not like Charlie Sheen claims to have piping through his once Adonis-like Hollywood body. Actually, I think many of you may have tiger blood too. In fact, I know that my best friend from high school has it.

For those of you who know me, remember I graduated from Strasburg-Franklin High School, home of the Tigers. So obviously that attributes to my tiger blood status, but there is much, much more. Have you ever seen a mother tiger with her cubs? Notice how protective a tigress is with her little striped baby. And don't forget being very territorial when it comes to her family. Ah yes, I think you're getting the picture.

Yes, I've said it before and I'm sure I'll repeat it in the future. I am one of "those" mothers. I try to be a groovy, cool mom and not overprotective of my son, but don't push your luck or cause harm to him. My tiger blood will boil and that's not something you want to tangle with, trust me.

I've seen my best friend protect her son too. She will shield him from life's troubles and steer him in the right direction. After all, a mother's job, whether a striped beauty from the jungle or someone like you and me, needs to provide all the necessary protection so our children can develop into strong adults and leaders in our own jungle—society. When the time is right, and all tigresses know when that is, we will let our offspring go off on their own just as moms across the globe do. Yes, there is a time when our sons and daughters will leave the tiger den. It may be high school graduation, college or some other time, but eventually all sons and daughters leave to battle and survive on their own. It's just the cycle of life. No, I'm not going to break into a line from the Lion King movie, but the fact remains that it happens in the jungle and even in small towns across Ohio. Our young ones leave the homestead and venture out into the world, away from their mother's side.

I think your getting the meaning of tiger blood. And for some of you moms out there, I bet you've got a little more of it piercing through your veins. I know I do. Even though my son is 15 years of age, my tiger blood is as powerful as it used to be. In fact, over the years, it's become stronger. My mothering ways have altered from protecting my little bundle of joy from evildoers to providing guidance as he matures into adulthood. So when Charlie Sheen says he's got tiger blood, I wonder who is he protecting, his children or himself? I'll leave that answer up to the professionals.

There is no questioning my tiger blood. So move over Charlie, you don't have anything on me. Trust me, my tiger blood is genuine. If you want to find out, test me if you dare, and then beware.

Random things about me that you never wanted to know

This was originally written for my blog on  Holmes Bargain Hunter

I've recently read a blog written by a friend of mine who lives many states away, but I still stay in contact with through the wonder of technology—mainly Facebook. Her blog was entitled, "Things you might want to know…" As I read the blog and even reread it, I realized that there are just some things that throughout your entire life, you may never know about someone.

While my southern friend and I are no longer restaurant co-workers, her friendship helped me become the person I am today. I am a firm believer that everyone I come in contact with can have a positive or negative affect on who I am. With that being said, I wonder what it is about those around me that I don't know. Furthermore, do they know me? Do they care? But more importantly, can I do something that I really don't ever do, let people know the real me?

Well, buckle up, because I'm about to throw caution to the wind and let you know more about me than you'd ever want to know. I've used some of the questions from "Things you might want to know…" but I assure you the answers are 100 percent all mine! So let the random thoughts begin.
